As per a new book, however, that honor should go to a automated timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple trading ship required around 10 lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, that turned logs to planks using almost no human effort, the Dutch could build vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance in the continent and the world.
The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill turned a gear. One component transformed its circular movement into vertical motion to power the saw. Another component changed the rotary movement into a lateral motion feeding the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward one precise increment each stroke.
“Every component was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine these parts in order that the machine acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending stroke and advancing with each upward motion. It was a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
