Exactly 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
One thing the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia attached to her shirt.
It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the group.
